Ferris Aviation Limited, a company incorporated under the laws of Kenya wishes to start an airline business using the Kenyan Market as the local base but targeting destination within East Africa, and other popular African destinations and extend to Europe, Middle East and Asia which is a preferred place of choice for business for nearly all East, West, Central and Southern African Countries.
The Board of Directors of Ferris Air is therefore looking to fill several key positions to enhance an effective roll-out of its business; drawing its confidence from the fact that the aviation industry in Kenya has a robust wealth of experienced professionals both young and mature.
Key personnel
GENERAL MANAGER / ACCOUNTABLE MANAGER
The General Manager is appointed by the board of directors. He is responsible for managing the company on a day to day basis and is charged with the realization of the company’s vision, mission and objectives. He develops and ensures that the strategic plan is implemented, that the company adheres to the approved budgets and plans and that the approved policies and the relevant legislation are complied with and maintains a compliant, ethical and safe environment.
Responsibilities & accountabilities:
- Formulates the strategic plan and policies and ensures that they are approved by the board before implementation.
- Ensures that the organization is profitable and achieves a reasonable return on investment.
- Directs and coordinates the company’s operations and overall administration so as to ensure that the various departments achieve their target performance on the Key Performance Indicators.
- Develop and maintain a robust and conducive work environment for attracting, retaining and motivating employees.
- Provide technical support and advice on strategic direction to the organization and provide inspirational leadership to the staff for increased profitability
- Ensure the protection and growth of the organization’s assets.
Qualifications & skills:
- A degree in business management and administration.
- Experience in aviation with marketing or aerospace engineering will be an added advantage.
- A Masters Degree in Business Administration will also be an added advantage
- Age range between 35- 45 years old.
- Should have had at least 10 years experience in senior management in a commercial business environment with at least 7 years in travel and aviation industry.
- Should have a proven track record of inspirational leadership and ability to put together, motivate and retain a cohesive management team and an efficient workforce.
- Should demonstrate excellent interpersonal communication and negotiation skills.
- High proficiency in ICT
- Strong leadership qualities, result oriented and energetic ready to lead a young and dynamic team
Flight Operations Manager/Chief Pilot
The Chief Pilot will report to the General Manager.and will be in charge of the flight crew members. He will ensure that the team is well coordinated, trained and effective.
Responsibilities & accountabilities:
- Provide widespread administrative and technical support as he oversees operations of flight crew and cabin crew.
- Provide an infrastructure of support for communication to maintain high morale and productivity.
- Ensure aircrafts are flown to standards that meet criteria set by flight operations and all manuals which challenges or modifies flight crew operations renewal.
- Ensure that standard operating procedures meet manufacturer, legislators and environmental requirements
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory stipulations from Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and other applicable bodies.
- Monitor standards of operations through feedback from other departmental inputs.
- Ensure effective use of pilots and crew by contributing to the planning and daily control of operations by liaising with planning, crew scheduling and training.
- Monitoring and evaluation of route related issues through effective route auditing and flight briefing.
- Attend technical and operations meetings.
- Work with commercial station managers, pilots, engineering and crew in incident investigations.
- Draft technical crew notices
- Manage day to day line operations, pilots, crew performance and implement processes and strategies that lead to improvement of line operations.
Qualifications & skills:
- An air transport pilot’s license (ATPL) with appropriate ratings for at least one of the aircrafts used in the air operators certificate holders operations.
- 8 years experience as pilot in command of commercial air transport operations and 9,000 flying hours or more.
- A commercial pilot license with instrument ratings in lieu of the airline transport pilots license (ATPL) as the pilot-in-command.
- Should have a proven track record of inspirational leadership and ability to put together, motivate and retain a cohesive flight operations department and an efficient work force.
- Should demonstrate excellent interpersonal communication and negotiation skills.
- Should be computer literate.
- Must have strong leadership qualities, result oriented and energetic: ready to lead a young and dynamic team
Technical Manager
The technical manager will report to the General Manager and will be in charge of engineering and maintenance department.
Responsibilities & Accountabilities
- Ensures that the aircraft is well maintained at all times and carries out all routine maintenance per approved schedules.
- Liaises with the technical collaborators and ensures that they deliver per contract
- Ensures that all safety checks are performed on the aircraft before takeoff and after every flight.
- Ensures that adequate stocks of spare parts are maintained at all times
Qualifications & skills:
- The technical manager should have a degree in aerospace engineering
- Masters degree in aerospace engineering will be an added advantage
- Hold a license in maintenance engineering with appropriate airframe, power plant and avionics ratings.
- Ten (10) years’ experience in maintaining the same category and class of aircraft used by the air operator certificate holder (B757/B767/B777)
- Nine (9) years in the capacity of returning aircraft to service.
Commercial Manager (Sales and Marketing Manager)
The Commercial Manager will report to General Manager and will develop business plans that coordinate the sales and marketing strategy, diversification and business development. He will also evaluate the performance of existing business, evaluating processes and highlighting opportunities that would lead to increase in profit, efficiency, productivity that will provide Ferris Air with a competitive advantage.
Responsibilities & Accountabilities
- Investigate, evaluate, develop and advise on business initiatives
- Liaising with third party research agencies, consultants and potential joint venture partners.
- Develop detailed business plans supporting implementation for approved business development
- Execute new products and business projects after approval of business plans
- Work in tandem with other heads of departments to formulate, update and maintain comprehensive budgets and products.
- Effecting close monitoring of market research and market trends, identifying possible market gaps and ensuring reliability of planning assumptions within existing and new business plans.
- Assisting in developing new products and brand portfolio proposals, based on research and gap analysis.
- Guaranteeing integrity of data in the reports due to management to be used in decision making.
- Producing, analyzing and maintaining cost benefit analysis and documentation as may be required by the board of directors
- Producing high quality presentations for top management and board level consumption
- Organize and run both marketing and sales activities such as launches and brand building.
Qualifications & skills:
- A Masters or bachelor’s degree in a business related course from a recognized university.
- Professional qualification in accounting and/or marketing will be an added advantage.
- At least 7 years’ experience preferably relevant to the aviation or travel industry will be an added advantage.
- Reasonable exposure to Microsoft office suite applications
- Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills
- Should demonstrate an excellent track record of exceptional leadership qualities and management practices
Finance Manager
The Finance Manager will report to the General Manager and will be responsible for financial reporting, control and prudent management of the company’s resources.
Responsibilities & Accountabilities
- Oversee the finance function in the organization
- Ensure preparation of accurate timely reports to board and management and other stakeholders
- Analysis of financial data to provide management reports that ensure that decisions are timely and informed
- Preparation of the company’s budgets and monitoring of the same
Qualifications & skills:
- A degree in Finance or Accounting from a recognized university
- Relevant professional qualification and membership of a professional body
- Minimum of at least 7 years’ working experience in a similar position
- Computer literate and able to appreciate accounting software applications
- Broad view of business operations
- Should demonstrate leadership, sound management practices and should possess excellent communication and people skills
- Should be of high integrity and able to meet expected reporting time lines.
- Having held a similar position in the aviation/ logistics industry will be an added advantage
Quality Assurance Manager
The Quality Assurance Manager will report to the General Manager and will be responsible for total aircraft quality assurance.
Key role of the Quality Assurance Manager is to give assurance that the aircraft has complied with all safety requirements and that maintenance routines are carried out according to schedule.
Responsibilities & accountabilities:

- Successful completion of training in a quality management course recognized by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.

Network and Computer Systems Administrator
Organize, install, and support an organization’s computer systems, including local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), network segments, intranets, and other data communication systems.
- Determine what the organization needs in a network and computer system before it is set up
- Install all network hardware and software and make needed upgrades and repairs
- Maintain network and computer system security and ensure that all systems are operating correctly
- Collect data in order to evaluate the network’s or system’s performance and help make the system work better and faster
- Add users to a network and assign and update security permissions on the network
- Train users on the proper use of hardware and software
- Solve problems when a user or an automated monitoring system informs them that a problem exists
Other Duties:
Manage organization’s servers and desktop and mobile equipment. Ensure that email and data storage networks work properly. Make sure that employees’ workstations are working efficiently and stay connected to the central computer network and managing telecommunication networks.
Help network architects design and analyze network models. Participate in decisions about buying future hardware or software to upgrade their organization’s network. Provide technical support to computer users, and supervise computer support specialists who help solve users’ problems.
Important Qualities
Analytical skills. Analytical skills to evaluate network and system performance and determine how changes in the environment will affect it.
Communication skills. Describe problems and their solutions to non-IT workers.
Computer skills. Oversee the connections of many different types of computer equipment and must ensure that they all work together properly.
